MS Now: Ali Velshi brings us the story of a group of former astronauts who have launched a new mission to better mankind.
August 10, 2026
Drawing a parallel between spaceflight and democracy, Astronauts for America asserts that ignoring evidence in space jeopardizes lives, while ignoring facts in a democracy undermines stability, trust, and public well-being. The scientific journal Nature reports that during Trump’s first year back in office, “[m]ore than 7,800 research grants terminated or frozen. Some 25,000 scientists and personnel gone from agencies that oversee research. Proposed budget cuts of 35% — amounting to US$32 billion.”
As the nonprofit’s website says, “Astronauts For America is a nonpartisan organization of former NASA astronauts who have sworn to defend the Constitution of the United States. We are committed to science, evidence-based decision-making, public service, and the rule of law.
